Maverick Missions

Mission:

To provide humanitarian aid to victims of persecution, violence and armed conflict, transformative opportunities to those who serve them and support for grassroots organizations providing critical long term services.

Vision:To take part in healing the world through crisis assistance that seeks justice, dignity and harmony. We hope to create a world where all people have the opportunity to flourish and the good of all becomes the goal of each.

Maverick Missions is a project based on compassion, hope and humility. Our goal is to offer assistance to victims of persecution, violence and armed conflict.

The refugee crisis as it is commonly referred to, with more than 65 million people currently displaced, is arguably the greatest geo-political issue of our time. More appropriately described as a "human crisis" there are men, women and children who have survived unimaginable trauma only to discover that they are invisible to their global community.

Our efforts focus on assisting the thousands of refugees stranded in Greece who have fled their home countries due to extreme violence and war in search of peace and safety. Unable to work or join family in other parts of the world these individuals languish in refugee camps and intolerable, inhumane detention centers on the Greek Islands. The majority of refugees are from Syria where, according to the Global Trends 2016 report, 650 out of every 1,000 people have been forcibly displaced due to the country's internal conflict. Nearly half of all refugees are children and according to recent reports more than 2,000 unaccompanied minors are stranded alone on the streets of Greece.

Recent data shows that there are more than 86,000 pending claims for asylum in Greece compared to 11,400 in 2015. This massive influx has stretched Greece beyond capacity and funding cuts have forced large NGOs to cease relief operations. It is now up to the small, grassroots organizations to provide the majority of relief services. Without individual volunteers, small non-profit organizations and efforts like Maverick Missions there is little hope for the innocent people trapped within this humanitarian crisis.

Asylum seekers face unimaginable life-threatening hurdles in order to escape war and related violence of extremist regimes. Once they survive the journey to one of the Greek islands they are faced with major barriers caused by political and bureaucratic policies while being detained in prison-like, unsanitary conditions. After months of legal paperwork, a fortunate asylum seeker will be allowed to wait out the rest of the process in a refugee camp on mainland Greece. Although they are entitled to receive a small amount of monthly financial assistance for food, it is not nearly enough to survive on. Asylum seekers are not allowed to work while their claim is pending, the children are not given access to formal education and mental health issues are rampant. Most are separated from their family and unaccompanied minors are often forced into prostitution. Suicide and attempted suicide is commonplace.

Refugees served by Maverick Missions are confronted with the most basic human need- physical survival. Providing food, clothing and shelter are our top priorities followed by opportunities to establish a strong foundation for a successful future.

While Maverick Missions will offer assistance to any refugee in need, we will proactively align our efforts to focus on serving three groups of refugees who are particularly vulnerable:

  • The Yazidis
  • Unaccompanied minors
  • Single parent families
