Indonesia and the Malay Archipelago in Southeast Asia are experiencing economic growth. With this growth comes the widening of the gap between the rich and the poor. Almost 14.3% of Indonesians live under the poverty line and are concentrated in rural areas often times in slums. These conditions combined with government restrictions and brutal natural disasters make getting adequate access to food increasingly difficult.
According to the Global Hunger Index (GHI) in 2016, more than in the Archipelago (Indonesia and Malaysia are part of the Malay Archipelago) are malnourished. Further, at least two children out of 100 die before the age of five. On top of those malnourished, almost 87 Million residents have compromised access to food and roughly 37.2% of children have stunted growth.
A garden barrel might consist of a 55-gallon drum filled with soil and seeds. A full barrel can hold up to 50 plants of whatever variety. The concept behind a barrel is to save time and water and provides an easier growing method than traditional gardening. It can even be uses as a compost simultaneously with growing crops.
AtFeed Indonesia we want to work to fight this hunger crisis and provide access to healthy and nutritious food for those in need. We are doing so by providing families with garden barrels and the resources necessary to grow the food they so desperately need. We also want to share the gospel and work to provide spiritual covering and discipleship to families who accept Christ.
Please consider helping us today. A monthly donation of $20 allows 4 new families to experience a transforming, healthy garden and gives them reliable access to food.
