The organization: Nova Education Labs helps Christian schools fulfill their missions to disciple students in the way of Christ. It does so by resourcing school leaders and training teachers to bring entrepreneurial design thinking and the rich resources of the Christian faith to their own lives and to their classrooms.
The problems: Too many young people are failing to thrive or are leaving the American church altogether because a narrow understanding of the Christian faith and allegiance to a host of idols keep it from looking like Jesus.Meanwhile, many administrators and teachers in Christian schools feel exhausted, isolated, and ill-equipped to remedy this deficit in the lives of their students.
The opportunity: Christian K-12 educators are uniquely positioned to train students in the sacrificial and life-giving way of Christ that is needed for the renewal of the Church and its witness in our day.We believe this can happen if school communities can renew their vision for discipleship, unite around important faith commitments and spiritual practices, and innovate inside and outside of the classroom in ways that encourage students to engage more deeply with course content, with God, and with their neighbors.
The means:Nova will provide school administrators (heads of school, principals, and directors of learning) with workshop curricula by which they can introduce faculty to Christian spiritual practices, an entrepreneurial mindset, and instructional design emphases that help them to clearly reflect Christ to our young people.Nova will also run a fellows program designed to allow high-potential early-career teachers from different schools to more deeply understand Christ-centered education and to sharpen their instructional prowess together--in the hope that they will become legendary teachers whose lives will touch countless students with God's love over the course of their careers.
The personnel: Dr. Kevin Taylor is the founder of Nova.He has a Ph.D. in Religious Studies (with a specialization in Religion and Society), an M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction, and more than two decades of experience as a teacher and program director in Christian K-12 schools in Guatemala and the United States. He also has connections with a number of organizations inside and outside of the Christian education sector that will assist in this effort.
The future:Nova has entered an exploratory phase to discern interest among Christian school administrators and teachers, with an eye towards launching a pilot program as early as the 2021-2022 school year.
