Christian English Language Academy (CELA)

Mission Statement:  The purpose is to create Christ-centered resources for all ages that effectively teach English and the Bible, so that students around the world may grow in their knowledge of and love for Him.

OVERVIEW:
The Christian English Language Academy (CELA) exists so that:

  • ESL (English-as-a-Second-Language) students around the world will grow in their knowledge of the Bible and the God of the Bible

  • Students (of all ages) will grow in their grasp and use of the English language

  • ESL teachers will be able to spend less time working on curriculum and more time working directly with their students

Problem Being Solved?

The purpose of reading is to understand what the author is saying. However, over 750 million people are illiterate. Further, The British Council estimates that there are currently over 1 billion English learners in the world. This number is expected to double to 2 billion by the year 2020. According to the Office of English Language Acquisition, 9% of all students in the U.S. (4.472,563) during the 2011-12 school year were English learners. These students require quality materials to address their need to learn English within an appropriate context.

How are you solving it?

CBI (Content Based Instruction) research shows that students learn better when they learn English while learning a subject. The content included in the Bible meets not only their intellectual need of learning a language, but could also address spiritual questions that the students may have. We write curriculum to enable teachers, churches mission organizations etc. to have materials to teach students ESL and the Bible simultaneously.

Why are you qualified?

Due to our experience in teaching/tutoring and writing curriculum, we are qualified to meet this need. The Project Manager has over 20 years of teaching experience and curriculum development. She also has a PhD in Intercultural Education. Others working on the project are also experienced teachers and writers.

What is the urgency?

Most of the ESL curriculum that currently exists teaches English in a secular context such as partying or going to a fortune teller (future tense). These contexts are offensive to many cultures. Curriculum is needed that is not offensive, but also assists the students in simultaneously learning the Bible and English. In addition, there are many missionaries, churches, and schools who are looking for quality curriculum to teach both the Bible and English. As mentioned in the earlier statistics, over 1 billion students around the world desire to learn English. This large number creates an urgency in and of itself to meet the need with quality materials.
